Perspective

Working with 3D worlds has definitely changed my way of thinking. I have been living in a 2D world with just drop shadows making things appear 3D! I really have thought about every single edge of things now and about all the alignment and precision every single little thing needs to flow correctly. I have a whole knew appreciation for people who create 3D for a living and when we complain that it is not perfect because man it is hard to make something look right! Let alone the correct textures, that is hard too. It made me look way further into textures in real life than i ever had! It really is hard to absorb the entire picture and reproduce it artificially. The combination of both though truly is an art and it really makes you think your every move as well as try to see the entire picture. You really need to have an eye for everything and take it all into consideration. Yet you need imperfections included which will make things look most natural, yet that is hard to pull off. Anyways though, I really do find it fascinating but it really is a lot more work then anyone would think!

Interactive Potential

There are a lot of cool things to do in world in Second life. Just the buildings alone are really special to enter because it is students like us, that have already walked this pathway before. Their art and work frozen in time. Adding to the overall experience, and showcasing STEAM.

I have yet to explore much on my own in Second life, but i think that it is really cool that we can add our own touch. I had the idea of my object being interactive for one. I thought my passport could showcase peoples portfolio as their ticket to the next level, with employers or potential clients. It would make for great exposure and marketing of ones self. It might be neat if you could have hyperlinks taking people out to personal pages if they want to build a following.

(The next series of thoughts are totally out there because i wasn’t so sure what to add to make the experience interactive..)

Also i think it would be cool if you could go into Second life, in like a mission mode. You could make like a to do list or overall goal, and it would take you to the destinations or steps in order to achieve the goal. Like if you had wanted to go to college, it’d show you how to start. It could have students testimonials per step on all possibilities of what you can do from there or how to get there. Give life troubleshooting advice even if you feel stuck… or have words of encouragement pop up randomly to keep you feeling like pushing forward. Also if they completed their goals and marked em off their list maybe they could earn linden dollars to buy new swag to transform their outer self after transforming the inner. $ keeps me motivated i assume in world it could make it more entertaining.

Maybe encourage students to come there with their friends and family and tour together. Make it personal.
Maybe host projects in the world where a whole class can work on building places that are special to them. Like our little town or the college campus. It would be neat if the college was built on there id have fun checking it out in VR.
It would also make for a cool way to explore places before you go if you could go there in second life before planning vacations kinda get a feel for places ya know…
Maybe offer class time in the VR setting where you have the students come in there to learn if they’re online students. It’d be really cool if you could mimic the class in a virtual classroom, syncing your avatars up to your real life movements and yet being the avatar you.

The possibilities are endless, but those are just a few thoughts.

A Hero’s Journey

WELCOME!

This is the story of me, and my journey throughout the Hero’s Journey.
It is a series of steps a hero must encounter along their own adventure.
I have been working on Step 9:Reward, which states that “After surviving death, the hero earns their reward, or accomplishes their goal.” I feel like this is really where I am in life as I am making huge strides and am on the cusp of obtaining my AAS degree 1&2 and more. There are many more steps along this journey so let me enlighten you, and tell you what it is all about!

First off, I wasn’t about to turn my back to writing my own story!
back
So I didn’t!
front

The Hero’s Journey in 12 Steps

Step 1: Ordinary World – This step refers to the hero’s normal life at the start of the story, before the adventure begins.
step 1

So here i am in life looking for purpose..This is before it all began.
20190817_150540

I ask myself.. What am I going to be when I grow up? I say this jokingly because I am already grown up or so my age suggests, now really What am doing? What am I really going to be? Time is ticking and I figured I better get a move on if I want to see a change.
shrug

Step 2: Call to Adventure – The hero is faced with something that makes them begin their adventure. This might be a problem or a challenge they need to overcome.
step 2

I knew I had talent, but I never knew how to really approach how to use what  knew. I knew some photography but that was about it. That and Photoshop. I was good but not confident enough to promote myself and I really wanted to be better! I hadn’t really had a job I loved and I didn’t want to live my life on a whim of others generosity or not when it came to my future. I needed stability with my skills.

So this was the first place I looked..
beginging1beginging2

Step 3: Refusal of the Call – The hero attempts to refuse the adventure because they are afraid.
33 fear
So I signed up for college! I was in SHOCK! I had never done something like this in my life! I was going to be doing it online too. I failed doing online schooling when i was a teenager, WHAT HAVE I DONE! Seriously I went into PANIC mode! (Luckily, later on I saw signs in class, saying… “Keep calm, and don’t panic”) Until then though, I was panicking!
This is what Panic Looks like..
20200307_145929220200307_1500072
I wanted so much to pull out from my big decision but I also feared more the consequences of not fulfilling this journey.

So if your feeling the fear of something that could be lifechanging in a beautiful way. Tell that fear to KISS YOUR BUTT!
kmbkmb2
LOL
humor
Cause really now, that fears only temporary! Then you realize how that one decision was just the stepping stone for bigger things yet! Oh and having a good sense of humor for what life throws your way helps too! 😉

Step 4: Meeting with the Mentor – The hero encounters someone who can give them advice and ready them for the journey ahead.
step 4

So I went to talk to Annie Carver in the BFET department of the college!
Annie Carver She gave me the gist of things and was encouraging as all get out! She made me feel like it was going to be okay! So I believed her and i took it one step at a time, 1 day at a time, and so on and so forth! (Which by the way, if you ever feel lost or need help in your college journey, she is the woman to talk to!)
(This is me wiping away the tears of my fears lol)
tears
Which reminds me of the band. Tears for Fears and this song that is so perfectly fitting. Which I absolutely LOVE this song.

Step 5: Crossing the First Threshold – The hero leaves their ordinary world for the first time and crosses the threshold into adventure.
step5
(This version of that song, totally is for step 5, its more upbeat and gets you pumped to start that adventure!

So off i go.. This little birdy began to leave the nest… Slowly but surely, i got the ability to catch flight!
Or maybe I am more like this bat here, since i do love the night!
bat
which also is when I would work on most my college work since I was mainly an online student, which makes this whole thing way more doable for a stay at home mom like me!

This is where I decided to land! DSCN1935
I was told I would need Keys for my journey and I would gain them as I go.
These are those keys! I would call them keys to Success for sure once acquired, you could do anything.
key-to-keys-to-success-hero's journey

Step 6: Tests, Allies, Enemies – The hero learns the rules of their new world. During this time, they endure tests of strength of will, meets friends, and comes face to face with foes.
step 6
During my schooling, I could be my best friend or worst enemy when it came to getting things done! Alas I wound up passing all my classes, procrastination on my end never did help. Also I withdrew at one point due to life giving me entirely too many lemons!

Which at first it was just one lemon, (This lemon)lemon
I thought i got rid of it by burying it but it came back with vengeance and I had a whole lemon tree all of a sudden to deal with!
lemon-1117565_1920
talk about a beautiful disaster, I had to do something to use what i had to transform my situation for the better.

Step 7: Approach – Setbacks occur, sometimes causing the hero to try a new approach or adopt new ideas.
step 7

I was now in a spot i was very ashamed of, I wasn’t in school and I owed money, what was I to do!
Well……..
I took the lemons of life and I made lemon aid!
lemonade-1914113_1920
I was tired of having a bitter taste in my mouth so I tackled my situation head on which made things a lot sweeter! I worked hard to pay back my debts as I went to school, they allowed me a chance to prove myself So i did! I was able to pay those debts and get back on track, Thank You Peninsula College!
swmile

Step 8: Ordeal – The hero experiences a major hurdle or obstacle, such as a life or death crisis.
step 8
There was so much more to my struggle then met the eye! I was in a dark place in life, and it was no where I wanted to be. A cold COLD place at that. So cold that it brought on this snow here
snoww3
I was NOT HAPPY as you can see. snoww2

Step 9: Reward – After surviving death, the hero earns their reward or accomplishes their goal.step 9snow

But then I’m like hey, this snow is really beautiful, and life is too. I have worked really hard to be where I am now, and it wasn’t always easy. College has definitely brightened up my world. I am almost done really, and I am already seeing the positive side of things! I am already branding myself, and promoting myself to the world. This is just the beginning but I do feel the accomplishment! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
This is how i feel inside! gold
Cause knowledge is wealth, I feel so much more confident approaching the job world.  don’t have to fabricate my experience, Baby I’ve got it!
I have 2 certificates already going on 2 degrees and a high school diploma to boot! Making major strides in life and fixing my mistakes.

Step 10: The Road Back – The hero begins their journey back to their ordinary life.
step 10 a
I am beginning to use what I have learned to look for potential work.

Step 11: Resurrection Hero – The hero faces a final test where everything is at stake and they must use everything they have learned.
step 1q

I am almost done, but completing the last few classes, including math, my worst enemy. SO CLOSE YET SO FAR! I must use everything I have learned to stay afloat and keep my pirate ship from sinking!
boat

Step 12: Return with Elixir – The hero brings their knowledge or the “elixir” back to the ordinary world, where they applies it to help all who remain there.

I am on my way to being able to use what I have learned and apply it to real world! Currently I am awaiting 2 potential job opportunities that i can use and apply these skills towards. I have other things in mind too this is only the beginning! I have volunteered recently towards the Irrigation Festival as well to apply my skills and to give back to my community!

Here is a picture of my virtual Me, sitting next to luggage! and there sits my passport!
I created a passport as one of my Achievement Awards.

And as Dr.Suess once said, “Oh the Places you will go!”

The sky is the limit!

And it’s all because, i decided to expand my horizons!

These are the pictures I created for inside the passports! They are to represent each Career Pathway you can learn and build towards while getting a degree here at the college. The passport is to represent the freedom you will have to go anywhere in this life with ease once obtaining your degree. You will have the tools to take yourself to new heights.

Here too, is my flashlight! i am very proud of my little flashlight because i made it from scratch! It is to be helpful in the sense that it will light up your way and make things easier on you. It will brighten your world, and help you find your way. To help when times get dark, and to shed light on all future situations. Also it helps you remember that your future is looking bright!( because whatever you are pointing the flashlight on and walking towards is bright and you’re heading towards it 🙂 haha and really because you need to remember that things are becoming less dark and scary at this point. )

who make coming to class fun! This was definitely one of my funnest projects and it is really cool how influential this Hero’s Journey story will be towards guiding and helping current students, and future students, and anyone whose just on there way to wherever it is they are going.  It reminds us all that we go through challenges but we prevail. It just breaks life down into all the little baby steps we must take in order to come out as the butterflies we wish to be.
Which is Toad-ally awesome

The passport im not sure how to make really, so here is a textured square in the right coloring for a passport. i dont know how to add depth really yet and it needs words written on it which i dont know how to do yet on secondlife.

Would like to import my media off secondlife but think i have the wrong program.

Virtual Reality and Health

There are so many advances in healthcare these days it is absolutely astonishing. There are the things we know, like advances in medicine that can cure or prevent diseases or the flu, things that may have killed us in the past. There are the advances of creating body parts and organs from scratch. And now there is the virtual reality aspect. So it looks like there are ways to deal with a lot of mental trauma with the use of these vr glasses. They can help people overcome traumatic events or even anxiety/phobia.  This is good for distraction of real life as well. The glasses help in so many ways. It prepares you for real world situations and also helps you deal with issues you have underlying. I can see the glasses helping in so many ways for learning how to prevent situations or try them before you enter them. weigh out all the different outcomes and therefor be more aware then you might if you just randomly try something. I think it would be great for patients to, who might not be able to make it to the doctor and want to showcase the problems they’re having. Maybe if they are sick and contagious this provides a way for them to be granted  the healthcare they deserve without exposing anyone else to the virus/issue.

Uncanny Valley

The Uncanny Valley is a phenomenon that speaks about peoples response about the eeriness we experience when something fake resembles too much human-like characteristics. One creepy example is the robot they have made that is able to make its own responses because of its AI. This robot is named Sophia. Check her out.

Kind of creepy in my opinion. I used to find my dolls with the moving eyelids creepy and they were far from the realness of this. I would imagine it would gain its own consciousness because it is constantly learning.  I can see that being a threat as well. There is other AI that is constantly learning too which is good for combat but scary if it takes over the world. Look at the lifelike way it moves… pretty realistic

I can see why there is this strangeness and sense of disconnect with humans because it is so weird to even feel warmth from the people that look like people that actually ARE people! Let alone something depicting us. I can see the appeal though for those who are lonely if you could just program a ‘person’ maybe that would solve depression or even prevent crimes, so in that sense i believe it could be a good thing, but im far from feeling comfortable from them being the new.

Prototyping

-Premise and Purpose
Reward

-Audience and Market
Anyone who likes the payoff of a good self challenge, college students/students to be/staff

-Medium, Platform, and Genre
Second life would make a great platform for this to all take place since it can easily be adapted to whatever it is we choose.  The genre would be adventure because you have to come so far from where you have begun! At times though it might feel a bit like a horror! Possibly a thriller since you never know whats to come next! Keeping you on your toes with what genre it really is, but in reality just like real life it is a mix! never a dull moment.

-Join a Journey
The journey is college. The ride for everyone is different but we all have goals in mind and we all want to be on my step, which is where the adventure is wrapping up and we can literally see the light at the end of the tunnel, and its a beautiful day.

-Narrative Elements
The things I have are the flashlight that can help one see when things seem dark and scary. The next is my passport that they get at the end, to help them move on to the next step! They earned it and they have the freedom to go anywhere, its a ticket to the next chapter!

-User’s Role and Point of View
User is to hold on to these objects and use them accordingly to get to their next life chapter, once done, they should gift them to the next adventurer.

-Characters
Anyone who could use a little light shed on their life, or anyone who needs to get away after feeling so stuck on their journey.

-Structure, Interface, and Rhythm
Not sure

-Storyworld and Settings
Second Life world. Maybe this could be played out else where too, maybe in real life if we created such steps/symbolic placement throughout the college woods.

-Overall Appearance, Movement, and Sounds
the flashlight is small but packs a punch. Maybe it  has different settings on it to lead you to different things. The sounds would be soothing. The passport would be waterproofed and indestructible too. The passport could even be suggestive on hints on where you should go next!

-User Engagement and Opportunity to Share Experiences
Maybe the engagement would be, people could see how others used the tools. They could see their journey and what this step means to them, and their ambitions after reaching this point.

-End with a positive takeaway and Call to Action.
My takeaway would be that once anyone has reached this point (or is on their way) that they would be motivated to continue and they’d feel accomplished, inspired, and stronger then ever to possibly take it to the next level, or share what they’ve learned.

Unique Branding through Media

So I was thinking about some media that I have encountered over these past almost 28 years. I was thinking about the things that stood out to me most during my life. There were a few things that crossed my mind that I loved, one being Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas. The other being my all time ultimate favorite, Alice in Wonderland. What a peculiar world Alice was caught up daydreaming in. The characters are simple and ordinary at first, but from the get go you can feel are in a whimsical world. The moment Alice drifts to sleep, that is when all the fun begins to unfold. I loved watching Alice fall down the rabbit hole and begin this unforgettable journey. It seemed so interesting and bizaare i almost wished I could experience it myself. The characters are unusual but I think that they are that way because she is dreaming. She is a curious child and was bored of the book with no pictures and so she drifted off to sleep. I think also the book has odd characters because the author wrote the book after telling this story to “the three little Liddell sisters, and one girl actually named alice.” His story was probably wild to capture the attention and dazzle the minds of the 3 little girls. What a fun story he concocted, he later came home to write it all down. It was magical on all levels. Things you never even thought of were in the woods she explored and the lost little girl had you wishing you could help her find her way out. There was a lot of emotion explored in this movie/book. It kind of had your imagination soaring, and the characters were nothing short  of that. Wild imaginations of the mind. The author was rumored to have possibly been on opium or laudanum to create such a wild tale.   But really, there is no evidence. Everyone was just trying to make sense of all the vivid ideas strewn throughout. The story was so wild that there is even a syndrome named after it AWS, it is a distorted version of perception and can effect multiple senses. The writing and the illustrations were an exotic example of daydreams and wonder, and I will always love that movie. I think the style of the movie has a branding of its own because it is very peculiar and yet it is classy looking, vintage and yet eccentric, peculiar, bizarre, and completely whimsical There is no example of anything even close to that made these days that i am aware of. The style is clearly Alice in Wonderland and anything that goes off from that makes itself obvious. The story is cool because there is so many deeper meanings throughout it, symbolic, and can leave the reader/watcher with their very own interpretations of the journey Alice encounters.
this link has beautiful illustrations.
